Whether you use them as a fashion statement or to cover up a bad hair day, hats are always in style.
For many though, rocking hats can be a bit intimidating. How do I wear my hair? What kind of hats look good on me? Can I only wear hats in the winter?
If this sounds like you, keep reading to learn all about the most popular hat styles and how to wear your hair with them!
When Should I Rock a Hat?
Essentially, any day is a good hat day. Nowadays, there are so many different styles of hats that can match any outfit you can think of. Whether it’s warm or cold outside, there’s a hat for you.
Hats can complete an outfit that is missing something and needs a cute accessory. And, of course, hats are almost a necessity when all of the dry shampoo in the world won’t cover up your desperately needs-to-be-washed hair, oops!
Picking the Right Hat
Berets, bowlers, buckets, oh my! Finding the right style of hat that you feel comfortable in can be well, tough, to say the least. While there are certain hats that will always be in style (ahem, beanies), there are also a ton of trending styles to choose from.
The main thing you want to keep in mind while choosing a hat is to make sure you’re wearing the hat and the hat isn’t wearing you. You want to feel comfortable and confident in what you’re wearing because there is nothing worse than leaving the house and feeling self-conscious in what you’re wearing that day.
Different styles of hats fit differently on everyone which is why I always recommend going to the store and trying them on before committing. Once you understand the kind of hats that look good and feel the most comfortable, it’s easy to understand what will work for you and what won’t.
Berets look good on a lot of people and add a French flair to any outfit. Plus, they’re awesome for the wintertime because they actually keep your head warm.
I don’t like to pick favorites, but boater hats are definitely up there as one of my favorite accessories! They’re perfect for adding a fashionable touch to any summery outfit and they keep the sun out of your face, talk about a win-win.
Fedora style hats are super popular at the moment and for good reason. They take inspiration from men’s fedoras but boast an updated, feminine twist with wider brims and an array of colors and accents.
Beanies are always a good idea. Whether you’re wearing them for fashion or warmth, they look good on almost everyone.
Fishermen caps add a masculine edge to any look and they come in a ton of cool materials like wool, denim, leather, and more.
If you’re into streetwear, there’s a good chance you already have a baseball cap in your collection. They’re effortless, easy to wear, and practical!
The list can go on and on which is why it’s so important to find styles that work for you.
How to Style Your Hair While Wearing Hats
The beauty of wearing hats is that you can literally style your hair anyway you’d like before throwing your hat on. Whether your hair is up or down, the options are endless.
Hat day is the perfect time to play around with different braiding techniques. The easiest braiding style (apart from your classic 3-strand brand) is the fishtail. Fishtail braids are incredibly easy to learn how to do and they look great on every type of hair length and texture. You can either do one braid in the back or two on the sides.
If you don’t want to style or manipulate your hair at all, rocking your natural hair is always an option! If you have naturally straight hair, try smoothing on a lightweight serum on your mid-shafts to ends to achieve a sleek look. If you have naturally wavy hair, dampen your hair and apply a bit of mousse or texturizing foam to enhance your waves. And if you have naturally curly hair, mix a bit of water and conditioner in a spray bottle and spritz onto curls for long-lasting hydration and frizz control.
A low ponytail is probably the easiest hairstyle you can get away with while wearing a hat. If you really want to go all out, try adding a scarf or a cute hair accessory to really elevate your look.
Whether you’re wearing a hat or not, a slicked back low bun is always super chic. Gather your hair into a low bun at the nape of your neck and secure it with your hair tie of choice. Spray down any flyaways with a strong hold hairspray to ensure the style lasts all day.
Beachy waves are also a great hairstyle option that look good with any kind of hat. There are many ways to achieve beachy waves but the easiest way is to curl 1 inch sections of hair with a large curling iron or wand. Then, use your fingers to tousle the hair and finish it off with a bit of sea salt spray for some texture. Viola! Beachy hair without the sand.
Next time you think about rocking a hat, do it! Fashion is all about feeling comfortable and confident in how you look and adding a cute accessory
